In addition, each character has a plot thread divided into substories. Each protagonist has their own fighting style to use against criminal foes. Throughout the game, the player will switch between different characters, namely series regular Kiryu Kazuma and the three new heroes. The player must follow the clues into Tokyo's seedy underbelly. The game also introduces three new protagonists who get embroiled in a web of intrigue following a shooting incident and the disappearance of a certain woman. Yakuza 4 Remastered continues the plot of the previous instalments in the series, featuring many recurring characters along the way.
